First look at Live Action Mulan
The Live action Mulan movie has begun production in both China and New Zealand. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this film due to the changes to the love interest in the movie, and the introduction of a new character that has become the new love interest. Chinese army captain Li Shang was the original love interest in Mulan and was the first Bisexual character in a Disney film due to him falling in love, or at least showing feelings for her before it was revealed that she was in fact a woman.
The new character is Chen Honghui and described by the Hollywood reporter as “a confident and ambitious recruit who joins Commander Tung’s unit.” This makes me sad because Li Shang and Mulan falling for each other was so organic and made sense. I don’t think I feel great about this change.
With that said there is a lot of major talent attached to this film including the main character Mulan being played by Liu Yifei with Chen Hongui being played by Yoson An. The cast also includes Jet Li as the Emperor of China, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, and Gong Li as the villain.
Mulan is set to debut on March 27th, 2020.
